Stories of people applying for thousands of jobs with no success aren’t proof there are no jobs, argues Victoria McLean of consultancy City CV. It just means that the people who are looking for work either simply don’t have what the employer is looking for or are searching in fields where the demand is low.
“Employers in high-demand sectors tell me they can’t find people fast enough – such as healthcare practitioners, tech specialists, teachers, creatives and so on. On the other side, we have candidates who are sending out hundreds or even thousands of applications and getting absolutely nowhere,” says McLean.
“The crux of the mismatch is candidates applying to sectors where vacancies are shrinking or where their skills don’t map cleanly. The people shouting the loudest about not finding work are often applying in the most competitive or contracting parts of the market like corporate support functions, generalist roles and graduate-level entry points.”
